Milroy’s Heavily Peated delivers on its promise

Milroy’s of Soho has been around since the 1960s and has steadily grown into an important player in bringing good drinks and spirits to the people. The London based merchant and retailer also has a steady reputation when it comes to whisky. It delighted us to acquire a sample of a new release that we put to the test today.

Milroy’s Heavily Peated, 13 years old, bottled at 48 % abv by Milroy’s of Soho

First things first: A secret Highland by this old bottler that is strongly rumoured to be coming from the Isle of Jura (which has only one distillery). Heavily peated but no information on PPM to back the name up with numbers. We know an age and that Jamaican Rum casks were used to mature this whisky. Also, as a batch, the bottle mentions “inaugural”. But inaugural of what? Certainly not bottling whisky, right? Since Milroy’s has been around for quite a while. Confusing intel here…

Upon Sipping: Let us taste the stuff. It is clear from the start that the peat has manifested itself in a strong lemon signature, really zesty, but there is another element there coming from the Jamaican Rum casks. I think of smoky pineapple mostly. The taste is very straightforward, continuing on the road of lemon zest. There is little else. The whisky is perfectly balanced, the peat playing to the quality of the cask, and the finish smooth and warming. I added some water to see if that brought something new to the table. It comes in the form of ashes on the palate. I am not an expert on peated Jura whisky, but since I am missing some maritime notes, I would easily accept it if this was sourced from another distillery.

Word to the Wise: An incredibly satisfying peated dram. I like it a lot, despite it being one-dimensional. The bottle states Heavily Peated and that is what it delivers on. The rum cask influence is subtle but very nice. A good drop.

Score: 86 points.
