Glen Ord 17 years old Special Releases 2025 with mezcal

A few weeks ago, I visited the Art of Drinks in Amsterdam, where one of the highlights was an older release of the Singleton of Glen Ord at 14 years old. That expression was influenced by Pyrenean and Spanish oak ends (yes, indeed) and I loved the spicy, luscious character of it. In the releases of 2025, we find another Glen Ord, again subjected to some heavy cask influences. Will the bright and crystalline malt of Glen Ord be able to handle it? Let’s find out!

The Singleton of Glen Ord 17 years old, Special Releases 2025, bottled at 55,5 % abv

First things first: This Glen Ord is a hybrid between two finishes, part of it was done in ex-mezcal casks and part in second fill ex-sherry casks.

Upon Sipping: I have enjoyed the mezcal influenced single malts thus far, so let’s see if Glen Ord can cope with this Mexican drink too. Ah yes, a rather rich and meaty nose, as could have been expected. The sherry is noticeable too though, not pushed away by the dominant mezcal. Hints of Suar wood, mixed with the agave. We will return to the nose later, the alcohol tinge is quite present. Taste-wise, this Glen Ord 17 years old is much more confident, but my oh my, there is a thick layer of bitter wood on top of it. Very outspoken embracing this. Previous mezcal samples came from Lagavulin and Ardnamurchan, but this Glen Ord is quite overpowered. Still, I do think I like what it resulted in. It definitely offers something new.

With water, fresher wood notes, almost like bamboo with a rain shower over it. Clear skies ahead now, but the waterdrops are still running down the base. Some sawdust. More sweet notes on the tongue now, but still no fruit basket. After a while, it turns more towards spices, ginger, and the fruity notes disappear into the background again. I kept adding water, and that brings out the mezcal side of this Glen Ord more and more. Satisfying raisins (finally) when enough water is added. Beautiful, spicy finish.

Word to the Wise: This bottling is all about the casks, and the question remains if the result would have been the same if a single malt similar to Glen Ord would have been used. In short: what did the spirit itself contribute to the mix, other than allowing the casks to shine? Entertaining stuff, at the expense of Glen Ord.

Score: 85 points.
