Decadent Drinks turns Millstone to the dark side
Zuidam Distillers is one of the frontrunners in Dutch whisky production, and known for releasing very high quality products. Not only single malts but other variants as well, with a special mention for their “100 Rye” releases. We do not often see independently bottled Millstone single malt, as the products are called. Decadent Drinks however got their hands on a rather talkative PX cask. Let’s see how we like that!

Millstone 2014, 11 years old, bottled at 51,1 % abv by Decadent Drinks
First things first: Distilled in 2014 at Zuidam Distillery in The Netherlands, this was bottled in 2025 by Decadent Drinks after maturing in a first fill Ex-Bodega PX Sherry Hogshead. It produced 320 bottles.
Upon Sipping: Very dark in colour, begging the question if this is whisky flavoured PX, or do we still get some Zuidam soul? When I stick my nose in the glass, we definitely get a genever vibe, with dark oranges and lots of juniper. The sherried element comes out a little later, with bung cloth and soaked cask wood. Some leather and tobacco too. It is certainly not a standard PX cask here, with those overly fruity notes. This is almost like a Sith version of a whisky, turned to the dark side! Now, on the palate, we do pick up more red fruit, concentrated PX sherry through a straw, with blood oranges on the finish. I guess the label on this bottle was designed after tasting the whisky. Lots of citrus in here, and very balanced. With water, some more forest smells, like standing under a tree carrying millions of leaves, so you are totally in the dark, but it is also July and the sun burns on top and the whole air is smouldering from damp heat.
Word to the Wise: I am not the biggest fan of the gin / genever / juniper aroma on the nose, but the taste makes up for a lot. Still, it is all about the cask. The Millstone malt is just a template here on which the PX builds a beautiful scenery.
Score: 86 points.
